In May 2026 Meta rolled out its free Business AI agent to WhatsApp Business users across India. If you run a business on WhatsApp — and 87% of Indian SMB customer conversations happen there — you should turn it on today. It answers common questions from your profile and catalogue, and it costs nothing.
So why are we, a company that builds WhatsApp agents, telling you to enable a free competitor? Because the free bot and a connected agent solve different problems, and conflating them costs businesses real money.
What the free agent does well
Meta's agent reads your business profile, catalogue and past replies, and answers FAQ-shaped questions: opening hours, location, whether you stock something it can see in your catalogue. For a business drowning in repetitive questions, that's genuine relief — and the right price.
Where it stops
The free agent cannot apply your qualification rules — it doesn't know that a customer asking about bulk orders should be routed to your senior salesperson within five minutes. It can't write the lead to your CRM, so the conversation lives and dies inside one phone. It can't send a payment link, check live inventory, book against your real calendar, or notice that a hot lead went quiet on Tuesday and nudge them on Friday.
In other words: it answers questions, but it doesn't capture revenue. The expensive failures in SMB sales — slow first response, no follow-up, leads lost between staff phones — all happen in the layer the free bot doesn't touch.
The connected layer
A connected agent treats the conversation as the front end of a system: qualification logic, CRM writes, calendar bookings, payment links, follow-up sequences, human escalation rules. That's an integration problem more than an AI problem — which is why generic bots, free or paid, don't solve it.
Our rule of thumb: if your WhatsApp volume is mostly questions, the free agent is enough. If it's mostly leads, every day without a connected layer has a measurable cost — usually the 9× conversion difference between a 5-minute response and a 4-hour one.
